How realistic is it?

During training, not very, since it requires a certain degree of co-operation to learn the techniques without injury. During gradings and the like and the higher up you get in the grade structure, the more realistic it becomes (black belt gradings are more or less along the lines of ‘you go into a room and it’s up to you to come out again’).

Does it work in practice? Well, there are plenty of Jitsuka who have been attacked (not because they’re Jitsuka…) who have survived thanks to Jitsu, even against other martial artists, so we guess so (those of us who haven’t been attacked).
