Mark Handley
Profession: Nursing recruitment officer
Started Jitsu: 1992
Sensei Mark Handley, a first dan black belt, has been studying Jitsu since he was at university. He has run clubs in Cambridge, Highbury, the Royal Free Hospital and in Bermondsey.
Among his many claims to his fame is having been a bodyguard to a member of the Home and Away cast while he was working in Australia for a year — a job in which a practical knowledge of Jitsu was essential.
“I started when I saw Rob Wakeling with his fingerless mittens. He said ‘Do you want to do Jitsu?’ So I said ‘I’ll give it a go,’ because it was new and exciting, I wanted to meet different people and it sounded sociable.
”I carried on because I found ramming myself into the ground was attractive. It’s improved my fitness and rising up the grades has kept me motivated. I also enjoyed the challenge of running my own club.“
