Ne-waza (groundwork)

Groundwork

The range of techniques carried out on the floor. These consist of osaekomi-waza (grappling), kansetsu-waza (joint locks) and shime-waza (chokes/strangulations).

Most of these techniques are more useful for Judo-style competition, although purple belts are taught how to defend themselves when on the ground, using strikes and kicks. However, many are still useful for pinning opponents.

Since 90% of fights end up with both opponents on the ground, groundwork is a vital part of Jitsu and its practice is important.
