A new introduction to the syllabus is the kata of restraints or immobilisations. These are ways to secure someone on the ground after a technique has taken them to the floor. There are many ways of doing this and there are equally as many Judo ground holds. But there are six standard restraints that are advocated for real-life situations:

  1. Yoko hiza gatame (side knee armlock)
  2. Yoko kote dori (side wrist trap)
  3. Yoko ude garami (side arm entanglement)
  4. Ura kote gaeshi (rear wrist twist)
  5. Ura hiza gatame (rear knee lock)
  6. Ashi sangaku garami (leg triangle entanglement)
