Shime-waza (strangles)

Shime-waza

There are several strangles that are allowable in Judo that are taught in Jitsu. These use either the lapels or knuckles to restrict the flow of oxygen to the opponent's brain, causing them to fall unconscious if they do not surrender.

Jitsu teaches six such strangles and their counters from both in front of and behind the opponent:

  1. Kata juji jime (half cross strangle)
  2. Nami juji jime (normal cross strangle)
  3. Ryote jime (two hand strangle)
  4. Okuri eri jime (sliding collar strangle)
  5. Ushiro nami juji jime (rear cross strangle)
  6. Hadaka jime (naked strangle)
