Ne-waza (groundwork)
Ne-waza is the range of techniques carried out when a fight, for whatever reason, is conducted on the floor. The techniques consist of osaekomi-waza (grappling), kansetsu-waza (joint locks) and shime-waza (chokes/strangulations).
Most of the techniques taught in Jitsu are more useful for Judo-style competitions, although purple belts are taught how to defend themselves when on the ground, using strikes and kicks. However, many are still useful for real-life fights.
The aim of groundwork is stop your opponent from being able to pin you to the floor or hit you – by pinning him to the floor. This involves many of the same principles Jitsu uses in conventional fights – taking balance and using the opponent's strength against him. Hitting isn't allowed in competition groundwork but is perfectly valid in the real world.
Since 90% of fights end up with both opponents on the ground, groundwork is a vital part of Jitsu and its practice is important.
