Obi
The belt or "obi" serves two purposes.
The first and most essential is to keep your gi tied up. The second is to allow people to distinguish how proficient you are.
An obi can come in a variety of different lengths. One that is too short or too long looks humorous.
Mons are stripes of cloth stitched to the obi, denoting exceptional skill and courage demonstrated during a grading. Mons are given out for yellow and orange belts. For green and beyond, there are no mons. If you have mons, you are a higher grade than those without.
Under no circumstances should you make mons from electrical tape.
