I am a student from London metropolitan university. I want to learn martial art.

What should be the procedure?

How much money required per session?

Do I need to be a member?

Yes, you still have to pay if you train at our dojo, since your uni club won't give us a portion of your training fees!

And we're not a uni club - we just use a university dojo (which is confusing, I admit!).

Hi,

I'm confused because I was told that if I paid the term fees at one of the dojo, I can train in any within that term. Eg: If I paid for term fees at my uni dojo, do I still need to pay for each session if I train in other uni's dojo?

Thanks.

Training times and prices are here.

Generally, it takes about three or four months of training once or two times a week to advance between belts at the lower grades; at higher grades, you'll need be training at least twice a week for six months to a year. In fact, there's a mandatory period of training time between purple and light blue, light blue and dark blue, dark blue and brown and brown and black of between six months and two years, depending on the belt. To get to black, you'll need to have run a club as a brown belt for at least two years.

[this is good] Hi

I want to come round and join in the fun. I've been to Brighton Jitsu and I got an orange belt.... and recently moved down to london.

I want to know a few things plz about ur club.

I got a taster at Archway Jitsu, I really enjoyed it but what is putting me off is the price. In brighton we had to pay £20 for the whole month but at Archway Jitsu its £4 every session, which comes to about £48 for a month if i went to all (3) of their sessions in a week.

Do you guys offer a monthly price and I could come as many times I like in a week? I only ask cos I really enjoy jitsu (honestly) and if I could do many sessions in a week, for less I'll be over the moon.

The second question is how many sessions do u have in a week? please tell me u have couple, preferably 3! and what days are they on?

Thanks for ur help.

The nage no kata remains the same as in judo since that's the original "guidance book". But the throw entries are different, typically from a punch, so the throws themselves are typically modified either slightly or a lot (although sometimes not at all). And various instructors teach the throws slightly differently, according to preference, tradition and more. I've seen upwards of four different ashi gurumas for example.

There's the British Jiu Jitsu Association to which all Jiu Jitsu styles in the UK affiliate (that I know of), but each style teaches the throws differently and with its own variations. The World Jiu Jitsu Federation, for example, straightens legs midway through throws when we keep ours bent - but that's a minor difference.

Hi, where do you get your throw classifications from. I see names that I recognise and the nage no kata looks throw for throw the same as that of Judo, but many of the techniques appear to be different. For example your videos of Osoto otoshi appear to be what I would know as Osoto gari. Gari being to reap. Otoshi would be to drop and is usually seen with the action foot placed on the ground. Is there a global governing body for Jitsu? Or a Japanese umbrella organisation that issues rank/ guidance?

Friend, thats no ashi guruma I've ever seen. Ashi guruma is foot or ankle wheel. You made contact with your hips/back/shoulder etc. Your throw was a dodgy Seoi nage. Ashi guruma is carried out face to face.

Yeah, the purple belt (and light blue) are missing because I just needed a good quality pic of belts and no other style in the world has our colour scheme.

I'll update the gradings with the right schedule - thanks for that - and the regional courses suggestion is a good idea, so I'll add that in when I have a moment.

Thanks for taking the time to look through it all: much appreciated!

Hi Rob,

haven't been through the whole thing yet, but here are a couple of things I spotted.
The photos with the belts - the purple belt is missing, I suspect that's because you found this photo somewhere.
Gradings are every 3 months not every 4 months.
Do you want to mention the various type of regional courses run in London?

Highbury Club runs a children's session. They train on a Wednesday at Highbury Roundhouse, about 5 mins from Highbury Tube station, on the northern line. http://www.highburyjitsu.org.uk

Lovely technique when done properly. Known as the inner thigh (obvious) the tori must remember to keep their sweeping leg up for about 2-3 seconds, otherwise they become entangled with the uke and lose their balance.

Kata Garuma. The B**tard mother of all throws. Essentially should be done with a straight back and the movement of the hips from one side to another. Realistically, most people decide to bend their backs and lob them onto the floor. Found in the Te Waza (third set) of Naga no Kata where uke has to roll out of the technique. This basically requires Tori to bend their knees and to release the sleeve grip so that uke can roll clear thus creating embu. A throw hated by many and loved by so few. LIKE THIS THROW? TRY TE GARUMA/URA NAGE/ SOTO MAKIKOME
